Discovering the Enchanting World Center of Bektashis

Welcome to the World Center of Bektashis, located on the outskirts of Tirana, Albania. This center is comprised of an impressive Teqe (meeting place) with a fantastic and rich museum on the ground floor, as well as a small gift shop for visitors looking to purchase souvenirs related to this sect.

1. The Teqe

The Teqe is adorned from top to bottom with marble mosaics featuring incredible shapes and colors. The Bektashi Order is a sect of dervishes that combines elements of Shia and Sufi Islamic branches into a unique fusion of belief and Islamic philosophy.

2. History

Bektashism was banned by the Ottoman authorities in 1826 but reemerged in the 19th century until it was outlawed again by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1923. This event led to the relocation of their headquarters to Albania in 1925.

3. Recent Restoration

The recent restoration of this religious center was completed, and the inauguration took place on September 8, 2015, in the presence of religious leaders from all faiths in Albania, as well as representatives of Muslim communities from the Balkans, Europe, and beyond. Albania is recognized worldwide for its religious tolerance.

4. Museum

The museum on the ground floor of the Teqe is rich and fantastic, offering visitors a glimpse into the history and teachings of Bektashism through artifacts, manuscripts, and artworks.

5. Gift Shop

Before you leave, make sure to visit the small gift shop, where you can find unique souvenirs related to Bektashism to take home with you.

The World Center of Bektashis stands as a testament to Albania’s rich religious heritage and its commitment to religious tolerance. As you explore this center, take in the beauty of the Teqe and the depth of history and philosophy that it represents.
